The Vietnam War for the US was the war that changed war forever. It was fought for 20 years from 1955-1975 and is the reason the draft will never come back into the US. The Vietnam War was so much more than just the effect it had on the soldiers which was just awful. It brought the public opinions of wars to an all time low because almost all of the US felt as though we shouldn’t be involved or there at all. With all this being said its still a war and it still has points that changed it.
The first battle that I think should be mentioned is The Battle of La Drang Valley. This is the first time NV (North Vietnamese) troops fight american troops in battle and although both sides come out thinking they have one it still marks a important point in the war.
Next is The Tet Offensive. The Tet Offensive was a string of attacks over two months to weaken that American and SV troops and bases. This is consider the turning point in the war and from this point on America and SV is never able to fully recover. Although they font lose huge numbers the position they lose come back to be the downfall.
Next is The Battle of Hamburger Hill. This might have been one of the most pointless and biggest mistakes by the US in the whole war. The us spends a lot of men and fire power to try and get this hill which serves almost no point or benefits to them. They eventually get the hill just to retreat and leave it behind. They lost men from the pointless attack and when news of this got to America the public support of the war goes to an all time low with everyone being against the war and asking for us to leave. This marks the point where people in the US and Vietnam had lost hope.
The Fall of Saigon. This marks the end of the war and the NV victory. The US try to get as many people out of the country as possible. What makes this battle important is it simply marks the end of the bloody. This war would go on to change America forever in the ways we look at wars. After this the draft was hated and making the chance of it return very unlikely because this was everybody’s biggest problem with the war, men that didn’t want to were being forced to go to war that was “pointless” and die for what was thought to be nothing.

The timeline above shows the battles I chose and the dates they happened.
